How do I know when to "check or raise" in Texas Holdem poker?
Yes, I sometimes play "Home" Poker w/ my family sometimes but I don't know when it is the right time to Check or Raise? How do I know which actions to do?
check when you wanna bet and vice versa
When I play I check just to try to get an idea of what kind of hands my opponents have. I raise if I am fairly certain I have a great hand. I don't like playing with wild cards. Nothing makes me madder then to have a full house or something with legitimate cards then get beat by my opponent with a handful of wilds.
YOU WILL NEVER GET A CORRECT ANSWER ON THIS HEREBEST THING TO DO IS TO GO BUY A BOOK ON TEXAS HOLDEM RULES AND PLAY.THERE ARE LOTS OF BOOS OUT THERE,AND MOST WILL HELP YOU. I DONT MEAN TO SOUND MEAN,BUT THIS GAME IS NOT AS EASY AS IT LOOKS,THERE IS LOTS OF MATH AND STRATEGY INVOLVED. THE RULES OF THE GAME MIGHT BE EASY,BUT PLAYING IT CORRECT IS NOTBUY THE BOOK BEFORE YOU PLAY THE GAME PSI DEAL TEXAS HOLDEM AND SEE 99% MORONS PLAYING THE GAME AND LOSING THEIR MONEYDONT BECOME ONE OF THEMDO YOUR HOMEWORKYOU WILL BE GLAD YOU DIDALL-IN
Check when you don't have anything and bet when you do (at least when starting out). If you're interested in winning a seat to this year's World Series of Poker, checkout http://PurePlayOnline.com
i agree with spider do your homework on how to use statagie moves for the raise and check it will payoffBut i do Know lots of players dont like it when you check and then raise so be careful how you raise. Or do what i do i ask how the table plays, its a polite way
You should take a look at Doyles Room's poker lessons, they're of great help http://www.doylesroom.com/education/
Depends on so many factors - for example, limit vs no-limit. What hand you have - what position you are in (first to act, last to act?). You may want to invest in a book like PLAY POKER LIKE THE PROS, SUPER/SYSTEM II, or HOLD EM WISDOM FOR ALL PLAYERS (though HEWFAP may be too advanced for you). A final thought - oversimplified, but it's been said raise or fold - of course, if you want to fold, at least check and see if you can see another card for free which might improve your hand - but if someone raised behind you then fold. Check/call is a passive and usually losing way to play in most instances.
If you aren't sure when, then don't do it unless you are pretty certain you have the best hand. Say you have 33 in the hole, and the flop comes A K 3, this is a good time to consider doing it. BUT . . . The check raise is a very advanced technique in hold 'em, there are many situations where it is warranted, but it can also get you in trouble. Consider the hand above, you check, and the person behind you is holding onto 10 J so they also just check, the flop comes Q . . . oops, you let them get there for free. The reason the check raise works for pros and advanced players is they usually have a very good idea of what other ppl may be holding onto. I have been playing for 15 years and I still get it wrong sometimes, but it also has made me a ton of money. So practice and it will come to you, but you got to start taking the chances at some point if you want to improve. Another little hint, if you check and you are pretty certain the person behind you lays out a bet to buy a pot, sometimes the check raise will allow you to buy the pot with nothing in your hand. Again this is very dangerous, but watch how a person bets, if they do the same thing over and over again it tells you something, and once you start picking up on that, the table will become yours :) Good Luck! > oops i misread your question i thought you asked when you should "check raise". To answer your original question, as a beginner If you have a strong hand bet, otherwise check. Look up online or buy a book that tells you which hands you should raise pre-flop, and stick to that strategy until you have a better understanding of the game.
