The only time the kicker DOESN'T count is if you both play all five cards

In Texas Hold'em you must ONLY use 5 cards to make your handthese can be any combination of the 7 cards but ONLY 5 of them. Now, it all depends on the hand whether or not a kicker will come in to play. Kickers are the cards that are not part of the ranking hand you are playing but make up your 5 total cards Here is how it would be broken down: -High Card (4 kickers) -Pair (3 kickers) -Two Pair (1 kicker) -Three of a kind (2 kickers) -Straight (no kicker) -Flush (no kicker) -Full House (no kicker) -Four of a kind (1 kicker) -Straight Flush (no kicker) I'll give you a couple of examples. Example 1: Player A: ace of diamonds, 3 of spades Player B: king of clubs, 7 of diamonds Board: 10 of clubs, 10 of hearts, 5 of clubs, 5 of hearts, 2 of spades In this case Player A has 10, 10, 5, 5, ace kicker, and Player B has 10, 10, 5, 5, king kicker. Player A wins because their ace kicker is higher than Player B's king kicker. Example 2: Player A: 2 of hearts, 2 of diamonds Player B: 6 of diamonds, 6 of clubs Board: 10 spades, 10 diamonds, king clubs, king hearts, ace spades. This is a split pot. Take the 5 best cards for each playerin this case, it is the Board (10, 10, king, king, ace kicer). Because both players have the same kicker it is a split pot. Example 3: Player A: ace of spades, 5 of hearts Player B: king of diamonds, 2 of clubs Board: 7 hearts, 8 diamonds, 9spades, 10 clubs, Jack hearts In this case, there is a straight on the Board, meaning each player is using the exact same 5 cards. No kicker comes in to play because you CAN NOT use a 6th card to decide the winning hand. Player A's ace is not worth anything. this would be a split pot. The easiest way to think about this is If two players have a tied hand, use a kicker to decide the winner if 4 cards or less are used to make the hand (four of kind, three of a kind, two pair, one pair, high card). If the same 5 cards make the tieing hand, than it is a split pot. I hate being this long winded but I saw neither of the other posters got it right so I wanted to make sure you got the accurate info. Hope this helps!
