join up to party poker, you can play for fake money first, they give you a certain amount of chips, you can play a game for 11 chips and there is a button you can push that will show you your hand, its great i couldn't play poker 2 months ago, and now i can hold my own at a poker table good luck google it i think it is partypoker.com

LOL! Yeah, once you start playing it really does catch you. Thing is there are dozens of different types of poker games. What I did was go to pcworld and buy a casino game for a tenner. Obviously, I'm not in danger of losing the car, the house, or my right arm. I have been lured into a real casino and have to admit it really was incredibly good fun, but I had money to spend!

buy poker books and read up on them. if you are in America don't use partypoker. set up a small amount of cash to play with and call it "tuition" because you need practical hand experience in addition to books. also use a notebook to keep track of what people do when they play cards

Congrats. Poker IS a viable source of second income. I've been playing less than half a year and I'm already making a profit (not huge, mind you, but I have more money than when I started). Do some online searches, read up on the rules and basic strategies for any games that seem interesting to you. The most popular form is Texas Hold Em right now, but Stud and Omaha are also quite popular, so I recommend starting with those three. If they start to make sense, try your hand at play money and start playing til you get a feel for the game. If you do a google search you'll come up with more hits than you have lifetimes for, but I guess cardplayer.com would be a good start. Lots of tools, articles, forums, etc. I recommend Full Tilt poker or Poker Stars, as they have the widest variety and highest traffic; you can find a game (for real or play money) at any time. Full Tilt also can boast about having professional players online (even at play money tables, sometimes). See you at the tables! PS I'm on Poker Stars sometimes, and I occasionally play for play money, when I don't feel like risking my own money.

I agree with the other people that reading some books is the way to go, but the only real way to go is to just start out in a 2-4 game and learn what your doing wrong. A book can tell you in general how to play aces and kings, but these hands play themselves for the most part, its the hands like A-8, K-9 and J-10 that will make or break you in the end anyways. I started out in 2-4 games and worked my way up from there. And even now i make no where close to 1000.00 dollars a day. I play in a 2-5 no limit game and i am lucky if i can grind out 100-200 in profit a day on average. Poker can be a cruel game to play and downswings and bad players can drain your bankroll, so you had better be in it for the long run.

Not just anyone can win thousands of dollars a day by playing poker. It takes years of practice, skill, and a lot of patience If you are really serious about it, read The Theory of Poker by David Sklansky.
